Machairas Monastery

A mountainside monastery wrapped in forest stillness and timeless faith

Machairas Monastery

Perched on a steep hillside in the Troodos Mountains, Machairas Monastery is one of Cyprus’s most revered monastic sites. Founded in the 12th century, it houses a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary said to have been painted by Saint Luke himself. The serene setting, surrounded by dense pine forest—adds to the spiritual experience, while the architecture blends Byzantine tradition with mountain simplicity.

Monks still live here, and visitors are welcomed with quiet hospitality. Modest dress is required (covered shoulders and knees). Combine your visit with a nearby forest walk or a picnic stop.
